A 15-year-old Winnipeg boy was killed Saturday night while snowmobiling near Beresford Lake in Nopiming Provincial Park.
RCMP say the youth was crossing a local road about 11:45 p.m. when he collided with a pickup truck.
Miles Hubatka, a Grade 10 student at River East Collegiate, was rushed to Pine Falls Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.
He was visiting relatives in cottage country when the accident occurred.
The teen was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash but, because of his age, was not legally permitted to cross a provincial roadway, police say.
Alcohol was not a factor in the collision.
Grief counsellors spent yesterday providing support to students and staff at River East, said principal Lauren Cartwright.
"It was a very tough day... a shock to the entire building," Cartwright said. "There is a group of students very close to him and there are others who may not have known him but are hurting for their friends.
"It's important that all our kids and our staff have an opportunity to get the support they need."
The boy is the fifth person to die in a snowmobiling collision this winter, according to Snowman (Snowmobilers of Manitoba Inc.).
Beresford Lake is located southeast of Bissett near the Manitoba-Ontario border.

In case you're wondering why I'm posting this, Miles was from my school, and we were in the same Math class. He was a great kid, nothing much wrong with him at all.
Like the article said, it was a tough day, and a shock to the whole school. Everyone who knew him was shocked. We'll all miss him; R.I.P. Miles. :closedeye
