Sir Paul McCartney may have been the first performer to be beamed live to a space station crew, but he will never perform in China while the country's brutal treatment of animals continues.

The ex-Beatle was given a preview screening of undercover footage of dogs and cats being killed at a fur market in Guangzhou, southern China.

The video shows dogs and cats being thrown from the top deck of a converted bus onto concrete pavements. Cats are seen squirming inside a sack before being thrown into a vat of boiling water.

Smiling, laughing workers are filmed senselessly beating the animals to death.

The report, which was filmed by an investigator linked to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) campaign group, was shown in Britain last week on the BBC's Six O'clock News.

McCartney told the BBC: "This is barbaric. Horrific. It's like something out of the dark ages. And they seem to get a kick out of it. They're just sick, sick people.

"I wouldn't even dream of going over there to play, in the same way that I wouldn't go to a country that supported apartheid."

In September this year, the 63-year-old and long-time vegan and animal rights activist, launched "High In The Clouds". This is a children's story about the destruction of a woodland, and the adventures of a squirrel who searches for the fabled land of Animalia, where the animals live in harmony but are overshadowed by an evil community; the polluted Megatropolis.

Also in September, McCartney launched his most "publicly personal" album, Chaos and creation in the backyard, his 20th studio recording since the Beatles.

To coincide with the album release he toured the United States from September to November and held 37 shows. On November 13, in a live concert linkup from Anaheim California with the International Space Station 350km above the earth, he became the first performer to play a live set for a space crew, by singing the Beatle's classic "Good Day Sunshine".

I'm pretty sure they don't box each other up and skin each other in China, figuratively speaking. The government doesn't exercise its rights to that extremity, neither does it abuse its citizens to this extent.:mellow:

Considering that a huge portion of China is consisted of laborers and farmers, most of them are not educated and have never been given the opportunity to be educated. Skinning cats and dogs is just a business to them with no sentimental or moral strings attached. I'm not saying that this ignorance is an excuse, but it's a lot more gruesome to us than it is to them. I guess its the same thing for other animal skins traders(i.e. alligator skinners, minx, etc).

I know what China is like in respects to animal cuelty. I've seen these tigers evicerated with only thier gal bladder or penis removed. I've seen the total waste and disrespect for life human and animal alike.

I think that it is a horrible misconseption that even if animals dont' apear to think like people, they still feel and think. just becuase they don't speak our language they still are feeling creatures. No living thing should be put through that sort of tourture. Especially ones with cognitive thinking abillities. they can think thier ways through problems and learn.

actually, they did. in the dark ages. and looking at the video, i would say this is pretty close to the dark ages. they aren't in hong kong here, they are in areas of poverty. i'll bet you that the prime minister or whatever you call him isn't even paying attention to these areas. like a chinese ghetto. this is these people's only job, probably the only one around, and i am almost positive they don't even get paid enough for it. i really think they don't know what they are doing, or why they are doing it, and if they did, they might even protest that they aren't making enough money. it is a classic case of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.
