hen using Internet explorer, I get this error message when trying to play videos at Yahoo's site (www.launch.com).
You must have Windows Media Player installed to use this application. Install Windows Media Player now.
I have WMP 10 installed, so does anyone know why this is happening?

Try going into Control Panel, going to Add or Remove Programs, and go to Windows Media Player. It won't completely uninstall Windows Media Player, but it'll revert back to WMP 9. Maybe something's just messed up with your WMP 10.

I've been advised by computer tech guys not to uninstall WMP because it could cause my computer to crash. Maybe they just wanted me to bring in my computer so they could make some money, but I'm weary of whether to believe it or not.

It's all about the money.
I highly doubt that degrading to WMP9 will cause your computer to crash/corrupt/bsod/etc.
I never trust computer repair shops. Firstly, their advertising ads I hear on the radio are soo fucking corny and unprofessional at times. Secoundly, I don't want any dumbass going through my files, sorry but it's not gonna happen even if I die. Thirdly, ever see the prices they charge!? $20 I think for a fucking virus scan and a spyware scan! I can easily download AVG and MSAS [or whatever prog you prefer], and do it myself...best of all, for FREE!
I should start a computer repair business. I could make soo much money off idiots. I mean look at the companies already in existance.

It is odd because it worked before, after I downloaded an MPEG 1 codec. However, now it stopped again. Also, when I try it in firefox it tells me I am using an outdated version of Netscape. I'm hesetant to uninstall WMP because of what Mark said. Not that I don't trust you Tomi, you've been very helpful before, just that I'd rather be safe than sorry. I'll use that as a last resort.

The only thing it does that even comes close is restart your computer when it rolls back to the previous version.
I used to use WMP for everything, and when I upgraded to 10 it didn't install correctly, so I had to uninstall 10 then reinstall it. I think what the computer guys might have meant is that you shouldn't try to completely delete WMP from your computer (like deleting the folder for it in Program Files) because it's actually embedded in the Windows program itself.
And just a side note/word of advice: Never install the XviD codec. It lets you play XviD encoded videos on WMP, but it screws up the playback of practically every other file type, and you can't fix it even if you uninstall the codec and reinstall WMP. No loss for me, however, because I've found that Realplayer is better.
