MONTREAL, Quebec (AP) -- Convicted child killer Karla Homolka was released from prison Monday after serving 12 years for the rapes and murders of three teenage girls, including that of her younger sister, according to a lawyer for the families of two victims.

Homolka became the symbol of evil in Canada in 1993, when she was convicted of manslaughter and given 12 years for her role in the rapes, sexual torture and murders of Ontario teenagers French and Mahaffy. The prison term also included the 1990 death of her 15-year-old sister, Tammy, who died Christmas Eve after Homolka held a drug-soaked cloth over her mouth while both she and her husband raped her.

She only got 12 years because the prosecuters offered her to testify against her husband...

Why the prosecuters thought they didn't have enough evidence and wanted to let her get off lightly is beyond me. Both her and her husband should have gotten life, but only he did.

I think 12 years is not enough for her. She should sentence to death because of murdering. I can't get it, why there's a murderer kill someone but only spend 12 years behind the bar. The murderer should pay what he/she had done. That is sentence to death.

Uhmm... That's not the kind of person you want in our society... Hopefully someone will ensure she'll never do anything bad ever again, whatever it implies, whatever the means.

To me, this is a load of crap...something so horrible happens (that's been proven, by the way), and she walks after 12 years. Bullshit. Yes, I disagree with the American justice system in most regards, but in the States, she'd be in for life, and that's exactly the thing she deserves. Lock her up, throw away the key, she's not who I want in society. We can live without her, thank you very much.

Canada doesn't give out the death penalty.

To those who say 12 years isn't enough: did you read the article?

They made a deal with Karla to testify against her husband because they "didn't have enough evidence" against him. She got a 12 year sentence as part of that deal, but it was only afterwards the police discovered video tapes of her husband AND her doing the crimes.

she shouldn't be free. and the police shouldn't make deals with people, that's just pathetic. why can't they re-do her trial then?

Well it's not like they can appeal the decision now. She served her sentence in full.

And you know what? I don't understand why there's so much media coverage about this. I mean, you never hear about Joe Bob getting out of prison because he stabbed someone.

Man if she was in Texas she would have been sentenced to death in no time because people probably get the death sentence there for being the blame of a fender bender.

She deserves a lot more than 12 years of thinking over what she has done. This type of person shouldn't be reintroduced into society after raping and murdering teenage girls.

It's just that she's one of the most notorious killers in one of the most horrifying crimes committed in Canadian history.

The fact that she's a woman and she's blonde certainly doesn't hurt either.

The whole thing that they "didn't have enough evidence" is bullcrap. There isn't a jury in Canada that wouldn't have found them both guilty, if you ask me. Granted a lot of the evidence was circumspect, but I find it highly unlikely that they both wouldn't have been found guilty.

At least, thats my opinion :)
