Edgar Ray Killen has likely seen the last of his freedom after a judge sentenced the 80-year-old former Klansman to 60 years in prison for orchestrating the slayings of three civil rights workers in 1964.

Killen won't be eligible for parole for 20 years — when he's 100. He was sentenced Thursday to the maximum punishment, closing one of the most shocking chapters in the movement to end Southern segregation.

Some people "would say a sentence of 10 years would be a life sentence," Judge Marcus Gordon said in giving him 20 years on each conviction of manslaughter.

Killen sat in his wheelchair in a bright yellow jail uniform and stared straight ahead, stone-faced, as Gordon handed down the sentence. The judge then asked if Killen had any response.

"None, your honor," Killen said.

Yeah, that tends to happen whenever school is out. I get it too sometimes.

And are you sure that light at the end of the tunnel isn't a train? Okay, enough off-topicness.
