A 12-year-old schoolboy reportedly addicted to computer games has died as a result of his 12-hour-per-day obsession.
The incident took place in the western Russian town of Yekaterinburg, as the boy, identified only as Sergei, was allowed by his parents to attend a computer club as a reward for getting good grades in school.
"When this boy came last time, he felt quite good and played for long, almost for 12 hours," an employee at the club told the Novye Izvestia newspaper. "Then suddenly he fell on the floor and convulsed. We called an ambulance immediately, doctors arrived fast and took him to a hospital."
The child was diagnosed as having suffered an epileptic seizure, not even able to recognize his parents. Sergei had trouble breathing and was put on a ventilator, but eight days after his collapse, he died in the hospital from a stroke.
"He was dying but could not tear himself from the game," said Alexei Sulimov, a senior doctor who said he and his colleagues were shocked by the death. "Brain hemorrhage took place due to sustained emotional stimulation of the brain. The boy had overworked. ...
"This was the result of emotional stress because he was obsessed with the games. Apart from his obsession with computer games he was a healthy kid and there was no reason why he should not have had a long and healthy life."
Government officials in Yekaterinburg have reportedly begun checking on local computer clubs to see if they're in violation of any city ordinances.

I don't think World of Warcraft has been released in Russia yet, so I don't know.

Give me a break man...I don't care how "hardcore gamer LOLOMGWTFBBQ" you are...the word "addiction" should never be brought into gaming. An individual makes a CHOICE to play a game that long, and should consider not only the abnormality of the situation, but the possibly health risks. The doctor said that he "couldn't" tear himself away from the game. Lies. He wouldn't tear himself away.

You're wrong. You can get addicted to anything. Even video games.

Mental "addiction", possibly. I put quotes around because utlimately, it's up to the individual. An individual does not take action unless it is done by his control. No one can control my actions literally. They can threaten or compell me, but it's my choice to follow them.

Just because you don't think it's an addiction does not mean it isn't. They just had a big special on the news (I think it was 20/20 or something) where they had specialists on for an hour talking about video game addiction and how it's becoming more prominent in kids lately. This story is perfect proof of that.

Why? How can you be addicted? Just because a show has a special on it, doesn't mean it's true either. If you think it's possible to literally become addicted to video game, prove it. I've proved my case: an individual under normal physical and mental circumstances (meaning not severely handicapped so that he is a vegetable) is the only one who controls himself. Every decision he makes, though maybe influenced by other people or things, is done only by HIS volition. If he chooses to, it will be done. If he chooses not to, it won't be done. If a man holds a gun to my head and demands I give him my money, it's still my choice to hand him the money or not, regardless of the influence. I'm asserting that it's impossible for a videogame to hold that much control over an individual to the point of killing him. The individual could have chosen to stop at any time, but he didn't. He may have thought it was in his best interest to keep going, but obviously he was wrong.

I've come to the conclusion that Link04 is Tom Cruise.
That's not a complement, either.

It's not impossible. It is a mental addiction. Not every addiction is like cigarettes or drugs, anything can put a hold onto someones mind where it is all they think about. I know, I was almost to that point myself. I used to be borderline addicted to video games. I would spend countless hours a day playing Ultima Online. When I'd stop playing, I would be going insane because I felt that I needed to play. That's called withdrawl. It got to the point where my parents actually banned me from the game, destroyed the discs and I got help for it. So do not tell me there is no such thing as addiction to video games, because you are just wrong.

So, if you've had experience with it, educate me. What takes place? Is your mind just used to the stimulation or what? There's still a gap for me as to why one is literally addicted to a video game. Would you say this is a self-induced or non self induced pshysological condition, where you think you have to play it? I'm just saying, there's a difference between thinking you have to play it and literally needing to play it. I'm sorry to hear about your former situation.
Here's a reminder that the boy died from epileptic seizures from looking at a computer screen and constantly shifting his eyes around all over it. The fact of the matter is that for some unhealthy reason, he played video games for 12 hours straight.
I think there's a difference between "addiction" and "obsession". "Addiction" would be used in cases where something genetic or chemical forces you to do something like smoke or drink. "Obsession" is when your mind feels helpless to do anything but do something such as play a video game. Personally, I think it's more of an obsession that an addiction.
And Link04, I know you're debating, but try and lessen on the whole provocation tactic.

It's weird. It's sort of like what adrenaline junkies crave. How they feel, they feel that they don't want to lose that high. I played the game because it was constantly exciting, and I always got a adrenaline boost from it, and it was a good feeling, and I had it constant, so much so that when I stopped playing, I would lose it and feel down, and I hated that. It's really hard to explain.
And Mark, addiction is just a stronger obsession, one that is very hard to get rid of. I know and have felt the differences.

Yep, i so agree with you there.
but honestly i dunno how you could play comp games for that long. Id play something for around 2-3 hours straight and then id have to take a break for that long lol. and this would be a game that id really be into.

12 hours isn't that much. I have def played sessions that long during the summer or when GTA/Halo came out. However, it wasn't daily and it was awhile ago. I guess I'm just that hardcore.
I guess later in life I can brag to my kids about surviving the video game epidemic of my day...

If you're playing for 12 hours and taking breaks during that time, it isn't really 12 hours, now is it? ;)

Poor kid, but what a total dumbass. I agree, they should put 'Natural Selection' on his death certificate.
Hopefully, the parents can get a refund from the game company.

Solitaire
Honestly, of my mum didn't have any washing, cleaning, cooking, jobs etc, she would play spider solitare all day
If you're playing for 12 hours and taking breaks during that time, it isn't really 12 hours, now is it?
...12 hours total time of playing GT4, so there fore it would be about, 14 hours ^_^
Hopefully, the parents can get a refund from the game company.
Justin, Your EVIL!!!!!
But honestly, they should get more, like compensation, because they didn't go to the kid (or at least we think) and say "oh, you have been playing for 2 hours now, we require you to get a drink for a few secs, and have a break" They just let him "Computer" Himself to death
A refund or compensation from the game company has been mentioned. Uh, they don't owe the family shit. Its sad the kid died and I feel sorry for his family, but it was his choice to play the game that long. A stupid and fatal choice, however, his choice and no one elses. Just as bad as people suing McDonalds because the food made them obese. Everyone needs to stop being so sue-happy and stop viewing tragedies as goldmines.
