I took karate for five years when I was younger. I absolutely despised it and refused to continue after my fifth year. In retrospect, I wish I had continued for just a little longer until I received my black belt, but I was bound and determined to cease my training. Oh well.

i know alot of people who have done karate and quit it, to me karate is the worst martial arts there is, no offence to anyone who does it, there are jus more effective martial arts out there in my opinion.

Taekwondo until I got my black belt in 5 years. I quit soon after, I want to find a more intense martial art. I've been interested in martial arts that implement gymnastics and acrobatics into their style, like Shaolin Kung Fu and such, but that's not very practical in the United States.

In the meantime: Watch this video (http://www.bilang.com/system.php?dl=S-124-FabianSegginger&type=sampler)

I did traditional northern preying mantis kung fu for three years.

I would have loved to had continued....but I needed money for college...so I quit.

The school I was training at also underwent major changes where I was at a complete static point.....useually that wouldnt bother me....but commercial martial arts is so expensive that there is no excuse for it.

Maybe after two more years of school...I'll go back and take private lessons.

Edit-- you do all know that the belt system is all a bunch of crap, right....there was never meant to be a belt system....because no one can ever master martial arts....not even in a life time

The belt system is for self-confidence, you think you're improving when you receive a new belt.

The belt system is also somethin to aim at, especially younger children etc, if a youngster is given somethin to achieve they will concentrate more. Also i guess the belt system helps teach respect in the way that you know who can do what.

I suppose

Its just annoying when people ask..."what belt are you"

and I have to explain that I practice traditional and that the belt system was pretty much created for the newer froms of martial arts

Ive got to admit though i guess the belt system can get stupid, for example havin a black belt 7 year old, theres no point, any adult could over power them makin the whole ''im a black belt'' pointless.

Karate for seven or eight years. I quit after I got my black belt.

People look down on Karate because it's not complicated, and in all visual stylings, depending on what you are looking at, Karate is very watered down. Then again, a vast majority of martial arts out there are to engage in combat whereas Karate is more to defend yourself rather than say, knock the living lights out of your opponent.

Anyways, not trying to start a debate on martial arts. I love martial arts for the simple reason that it teaches one self discipline. I think no matter what color you achieve or how "good" you are at the art you take, I think one of the best things I learned in all those years of training was self discipline.

But then again, I was never one who'd want to really "kick anyone's ass."

Tae Kwon Do 5 or 6 years
Soo Bahk Do 4 or 5 years
Jujutsu off and on for maybe a year
Taijutsu very off and on during this year at college

Jujutsu was my favorite, but college started and I had to head away from the school.

Tae Kwon Do and Soo Bahk Do are fairly similar, both being striking arts. Soo Bahk Do does a bit more self defense training, but in the end they are both 'show' arts, meaning more emphasis on looking cool rather than actual practicality.

The Jujutsu form I was taking however was the ultimate in practicality. It was not an art to be fooled with, nor was it built on the premise of looking good. Its a down and dirty way to put your opponent down, either through submission, maiming or death. Needless to say, it was particularly violent. For example: we did not only study knife defense, but also knife attack.

Taijutsu I was only able to take a few classes, seemed like a more friendly version of Jujutsu.

Its kinda amazin how many martial arts there is, but i dont see any of them as bein bad, in my opinion havin any knowledge of any martial arts gives you a advantage compared to the average person.

I did Karate (more specifically Kajukembo) for about 3 years then quit. Now I'm kinda regreting it because I think it was really good for me. It taught me ALOT of stuff. I got up to my blue belt (4th belt) and then it was green, brown then black. Just a little longer and I might have been at least a brown belt.

very cool

I dont know too many types of martial arts... those sound more like japanese based martial arts. Are they?

I got more into martial arts because I thought it was beautiful as an art form...and to also keep myself in good shape.

I have to admit, I've been messing it deeply.

I want to go back....but money is so tight right now....I cant see that happening anytime soon

You don't necessarily need to go to a school to improve in martial arts.

There are plenty of books that describe forms, etc. and there are many techniques and disciplines that can be developed at home.

And that is why people should quit martial arts and go back to school.

I can't gain weight and I can't lose weight so I've pretty much kept my same figure over the years.

Jujutsu and Taijutsu both have origins with Japan, while Tae Kwon Do and Soo Bahk Do both come from Southern Korea.

Though most Martial Arts pull knowledge from tons of other places other than their birth place.

For instance, Soo Bahk Do's founder, Grandmaster Hwang Kee studied several arts which he combined into Soo Bahk Do. I believe the kicks mostly came from and art called Tae Kyun, and there were several others as well.

I do karate now for.....um......mabye 6 years. I'm so close to a black belt.
I really like karate now more than i did when i was younger because i have more respect for the art form while when i was young i just wanted to learn how to take somone out.
I think alot of people stop karate because they don't find it exciting, you don't often do flying back kicks, spinning backfists, it is simple and to the point. Made for defence not to put on a show.
Our teacher is very into learning karate as self defence and an art, not as sport which i like. We do alot on chi on higher grades and breathing and focus to give us power. I really like that because it helps me concentrate, even outside the dojo. Our teacher uses the coloured belt system for cofidence still though, i think it is a good idea.

Also i hate schools that give people a black belt after training for maybe a year, that is insane. I talk to people and they're like:

"Oh you do karate, for how long"
i say "about 6 years, i'm almost a black belt"
and they're like "what, i did it for a year and got black, you must really suck"

I just want to puch their face in, then they'll see how much i suck.
Anyway, i really like martial arts, i think this post has gone on long enough.
