LOS ANGELES (AP) - Phil Jackson is returning to the Los Angeles Lakers following a reconciliation with the team that cut him loose last year after three NBA championships in five seasons.

Spokesman John Black said Tuesday the team has rehired Jackson, who was let go by owner Jerry Buss last June 18.

A news conference was set for 5 p.m. EDT at Staples Center.

Jackson, who turns 60 in September, has had health issues in the past and underwent an angioplasty two years ago. He told ABC-TV before the opening game of the NBA Finals that he underwent a series of tests to make sure he was healthy.

Jackson agreed to a three-year contract. Terms were not announced, but it's believed he'll be earning around $10 million per year.

:hmm: I don't think he will bring much effect to the team play. Anways he is a good coach I hope he will bring back the old LA Lakers.

Yeah, I couldn't decide whether it should go here, or in the Kick-Back Cafe...or in Random Chat. So if it's in the wrong forum, move it. My apologies if it is. :]

And my thoughts on this...

The Lakers will barely improve.

EDIT: Alright, this was moved. Thanks!

Well this is what I think will make or break Phil Jackson. I think he is the best coach, but when you look at the teams hes won the championships with. I think any coach could have won. I mean Jordan, Shaq, Kobe. Thats an elite 3 right there. This will show how good Phil Jackson is really. He only has Kobe as offense on that team. It'll be intresting to watch.

well i think the coach does matter.. when rudy tomjanovich left the Lakers started slipping down the ranks and finally was eliminated out of the playoffs. Im really glad to see phil jackson returning back to Lakers. Lakers were one of my most favorite teams when jackson coached.
I dont think it would matter if they win or lose games after jackson returns , im just glad to see him back coaching.

I don't see that happening as long as Kobe stays a Laker.

why would he go back? his new team (heat) won more games against the pistons this year than the lakers did last year and this years pistons team can arguably be considered better than last years team. the heat this year were a better team than the lakers last year. wade is more of a team player than kobe and why would shaq leave a better team and a place he is a lot more happy in? shaq will retire in miami.

the lakers will be a better team next year. they are a player away from being a contender. i dont think phil will make them a championship team in his 3 year contract. there are much better teams in the west than LA.

Yea I know the fact that Dwayne Wade is a much better teammate than Kobe is obvious, but im saying IF shaq were to come back here to LA Kobe would have to be gone, but as Nickel has said Shaq will retire in Miami, and I honestly think next year the Heat will win the championship.

Yeah, I don't think Shaquille will go back to the Lakers because first of all, his team has a much better record this year than the Lakers do. Dwayne Wade is a much better team mate than Kobe. And it's no wonder Kobe stayed with the Lakers. He's the only offensive player they have. He wants the show.

But I'm glad Phil Jackson came back. He's an excellent coach.

I agree with you about Kobe thingy. He's way to greedy for the ball. He always like to be man of the game. Last year, NBA Finals it was lucky for them to pull back 1 win from Detroit. Even if Shaq is still in Lakers now, there is nothing much changes around. Unless Kobe will play his game as a team, they might be an unstoppable team.

With the current team the Lakers have, there is no way the Lakers will be unstoppable. They are still very stoppable. Kobe needs a good big man by his side and then MAYBE you can talk unstoppable, and thats only maybe.

Yea! You are right but if Shaq is still on LA and Kobe is playing his game as a team. They might be an unstoppable team. But it will never happen that Shaq will going back to LA. Hell Yeah they need a big guy to help out. I don't even see Divac played for LA Lakers. They are trading him for fun.

Vlade in his prime would get the Lakers into the playoffs and maybe into the second round, but Vlade is old so thats out of the question. The Lakers have no money to afford a bigtime player for a few years, unless they make a deal that a team can't refuse.

I think Phil Jackson will try to search a talented center for LA Lakers.

Not too many talented Centers though.

I think Chris Mihm has potential.. if he would get ahold of the ball more often he would probably do a better job for his team

If Lakers want to win they really have to get some decent trades in to help Kobe, if not its a long shot.

The Lakers can do it, but not soon. They need more money to get star players.
