I've wondered this question for awhile: Is it bad for the computer to leave it on all the time?

If it's in overdrive for a decent amount of time, it can get overheated.

Depends how long you leave it on.

Leave it on for a few days it's going to smell like smoke a little.

If you have a suitable cooling system, then it's alright.

Depends on your setup..

If you have a direct connection to the internet, that can be bad if its on all the time.

As long as your fans are working, its all good.

I mean right now, my hard drives are *honestly* so hot they burned my fingers trying to plug in an ide cable.

Where the hell did you hear that? I leave my computer on for weeks at a time and it never smells like smoke.

well. I guess it depends on the cooling system.

Yeah, if you have an extremley crapping cooling system then I wouldn't let the computer be on for 5 minutes.

Any decent cooling system will be able to stand 24/7 use

Wow, I didn't hear it. My brother left it on for a week and it got a little smoke smell. Nothing happened though.

Mine's on until I'm forced to restart it [like Windows Update or I installed a big prog forcing me to restart], you know? ;)

I have no problems with cooling...yet.

We changed it a long time ago. It was an old computer anyway.

But it didn't suck. It was decent. And plus, it was because we hadn't installed a cooling system to it.

I don't see the use of keeping your computer on day and night. It's feckin bad for the environment and you don't use it half of the time because you're away or you're asleep. So why don't you turn it off everytime you go away or go to sleep instead of keeping it on? It's kind of lazy hm?

Overnight is a great time to download/do something that takes forever (encode a dvd)
