Retail DVD Bitrate

I was wondering, when burning DVDs what the lowest bitrate I could use without losing quality? I am burning AVI DVD Rips, if it matters.

Do you have a divx dvd player? If you just have a standard DvD player, chances are... your dvd player won't play it.

I am using Nero Vision Express to convert the video into VOB, IFO and BUP files. I just wanted to know the bitrate I should use for the conversion.
