The first UK human clone
By EMMA MORTON

A HUMAN embryo has been cloned for the first time in Britain, scientists said last night.

The stem cell research was carried out at Newcastle University.

Experts hope the breakthrough will lead to treatments for diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s or for spinal injuries.

It comes as South Korean researchers reveal they have created the first customised embryonic stem cells.

They are tailored to specific patients in order to overcome immune system rejection.

Yesterday, the Brit boffins praised their Korean counterparts as they revealed they had created an embryo, like the one shown above.

Prof Alison Murdoch and Dr Miodrag Stojkovic said in a joint statement: “The Koreans have shown that these techniques can be successful in humans.

“The promise of new treatments based on stem cell technology is moving nearer to being a realistic possibility.

“During the past nine months, our research has progressed well.”

But the research is controversial, with fears it can help create cloned babies. That is banned by law in the UK and offenders risk ten years in jail.

Last night Julia Millington, of the ProLife Alliance, said: “Cloning for research purposes is profoundly unethical.

“The deliberate destruction of human life at any stage of development has no place in a civilised society.”

I think that's ace! It could be such a breakthrough for medical science and could help a lot of people but then is it morally wrong to create a being/person just to benefit someone else?

If not, how about BBC News (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/talking_point/4564355.stm)?

Mmhmm.

So what does everybody think of this, now that the first clone has been made, what now?

My mom's freaked out by it. XD

Personally, I think that the cloning of FULL humans is unneeded. The cloning of stemcells however is almost vital to scientific progression towards many cures.

i feel pretty much the same. so much good can come out of cloning but i hope it doesn't go too far...

Hopefully we wont have clone wars. :P

I thought this was going to be a misplaced Revenge of the Sith thread, but yeah, I agree with Casey.
I don't get how some people have said that if they clone themselves completely, over and over again, they will achieve a longer lifespan.

I think this is amazing, but I think all cloning should be for medical purposes (finding diseases, etc.) because otherwise, we would seriously have clone wars.

Yes i think the stemcell cloneing is and will become even more important in the future. It is good to know scientisits are making advanements but it still freaks me out a bit. :chemist:.

Translation, anyone? (actually, I don't need one, but it's still funny to say)

You know that even though we use this for medical purposes, someone's going to abuse the power.

Yes, because all evil and leaders were poor and lived in their garages.

Any world power could get access to it.

ok, cloneing = possible breakthough.
power + cloneing = world domination, untill they find how to make babies born with artificaly

To me, if the good outweighs the evil... in this case, it's the medical breakthrough of the century, so I'm all for it.

And if it were used to make an army or whatever, it would take a while to grow them to full size, right?

using it for medical purposes is good, but one day, if it ever becomes comercial, i might have to clone myself, just for a laugh.
