All because they stamp a law against it, doesn't mean that everyone will follow it. Once they pass the law, Canada is simply going to be a little more like America.

It's been a long time you haven't posted here!

And, yeah, it sucks but is it gonna change our habits? I don't think so.

I think p2p laws, in America at least, are the most broken law in existance. Canada's not going to stop anyone

"This is terrific news," comments CRIA President Graham Henderson. "Canada is one step closer to having a copyright law that will reflect the realities of the digital marketplace and allow the music industry a chance to prosper. We want to thank the government and the opposition parties for their support in getting to this stage."

Graham Henderson can go fuck himself with a bottle of nitroglycerin

I use a p2p program(ares) to download music and I unshare my files as soon as they are downloaded.

Really, who cares? You will still be able to download music. It's just done illegally. :P

Canada cracks down on file-sharing, and no one is safe?

No one in Canada you mean.

That means all the sheep over there.

Humanity is still safe.

The US laws are laxly enforced, they just announce things like that to scare people.

They are making the same law over here in Norway. Was just wondering... can they like... catch you?... or find out that you are downloading in some way? :chemist:

Well, I think the way they do this is similar to torrents. You download something and they put your IP in a cookie. Delete the cookie and I think you are safe.

I think he was referring to the fact that Canada was one of the few countries in which it was legal to download MP3's.

As far as I know, in most countries its legal to download Mp3's. It's illegal in most countries, however, to share them with others when you aren't the one holding the rights.

They could catch you. I remember a few years ago where a teenage girl in NYC was sued for thousands of dollars after downloading a few songs. I have 1000s of downloaded songs and they haven't caught me yet, so, yeah.

It would really suck if the RIAA ended up jailing every civilian who downloaded music.

They usually only catch the people that share their files, not the downloaders.

How does is matter(i don't live in Canada)

most of the stuff i download, i wouldn't buy even though i couldn't download it. If I am a real fan of a band, like LP, i buy the cd, i don't download it. So i think most people will still buy cd's, if they really like the music. There was this one case, i think in Norway, where a student got sued for downloading stuff, and had mp3's worth loads of money. But the thing is, he did'nt make that much money, so he could only afforded a fraction of the music if he did'nt download it, and therefor wouldn't buy it anyway...

I don't think there would be enough prisons.

At the rate that the RIAA is suing people in America, they will have sued everyone in the US in about a few hundred years. Probably longer.

ewww. no more downloading music. oh well, i don't think Canada has the money to enforce that. i mean, i doubt they're going to try and get big ol' investigations on the go, to stop people from downloading music.

but the way i think they catch you, is like someone said earlier, through your ip in a cookie. but also, when you download from someone, a packet of data is sent to them, as well as received. this packed of data is stored in some form in a file, with minimal information about your computer. i studied TCP/IP for a bit. like to receive the song, the other computer has to know where it is sending it. so your computer basically sends a bit of information to the other, and it's just put in some useless file.

regardless, i know nothing of what the information is (probably like IP, ports used, file sent), and where it is stored ^_^

EDIT: and the only way i think they'd have this info, is if you yourself downloaded a song from one of the Canadian Music Industry people who are trying to persecute music downloaders. or someone working for them. who the hell are these guys kidding anyway? they're not gonna do diddly about people downloading music. it's canada we live in for goodness sakes! our music industry is a push-over!

haha, i received a message from the Canadian Recording Industry awhile back on Kazaa, telling me to stop downloading music because it was infringing something or other, copyright garbage, not fair to the artists, and told me to go to there site. so i continued to download music. 2 years later, i still continue, unharrassed about it.
