View Full Version : The "Tsunami Song"

This is absolutely disgusting.

I didn't hear about this til now, since I don't live where this happened. But it's still pretty screwed up, so I'm posting it.

Petition Link... (http://www.petitiononline.com/endhate/petition.html)

Here's what it says.

On January 21st, 2005, an offensive song/skit containing openly derogatory and racist overtones reached millions of listeners in New York City when it was broadcast on Hot 97's "Miss Jones in the Morning" radio show. While the radio show has a history of recording and playing such spoofs on a regular basis, the infamous "Tsunami Song" mocks not only the victims of the unfortunate recent natural disaster in Southeast Asia, but also all members of the Asian race in general with the racial slurs "*****" and "Chinamen."
Choice lyrics included:
- "All at once you could hear the screaming ch*nks and no one was safe from the wave there were africans drowning, little chinamen swept away you could hear god laughing, 'swim you b*tches swim'"
- "So now you're screwed, it's the Tsunami, you better run or kiss your ass away, go find your mommy, I just saw her float by, a tree went through her head, and now the children will be sold to child slavery..."

Just prior to the broadcasting of this inflammatory and extremely distasteful audio, the airwaves erupted into hostility when the popular morning show's hosts argued about playing the "Tsunami Song." The on-air quarrel started when Miss Info openly voiced that she had no involvement with either the production or publication of the song, as she personally found the views expressed in the song offensive. The show's other two co-hosts Miss Jones and Todd Lynn then launched into an abusive tirade against Miss Info for her lack of co-operation. At one point, Todd Lynn stated that he was going to start shooting Asians while Miss Jones told Info she's only complaining because "you feel superior, probably because you're Asian."

How the hell can people go and make a song about the tsunami and put people down like this? So many people are dead, missing, who knows what, and they go make a parody. What the hell?

I'm so pissed at how some people can be harsh about this catastrophe. This event will be in history books and will be in the news til the time I'm dead, for sure. And yet there are those insensitive enough to make a cheap song telling those affected to "cry to their mommies?"

The link that I posted above is a petition asking for those who participated in the making of the song, the cast and crew of "Miss Jones in the Morning," to be fired for their immoral and derogatory behavior. They deserve worse than that, but this is a start. Here is the official apology from HOT 97:

Miss Jones and the HOT 97 Morning team have been indefinitely suspended for the airing of a song that made light of a catastrophic event, as well as comments made at the time the song was aired.

Earlier this week, Miss Jones said on the air "I apologize to all who have been offended by my poor decision to go along with playing that insulting (to say the least) Tsunami song. I should have known better and I didn't. So I'm sorry and hopefully we can move forward from this, or I can move forward from this being a better hostess, because I am better than that, and I know better than that -- and you deserve better radio than that."

While Miss Jones has apologized on the air, in the media and on the HOT 97 website, station management felt that stronger action was necessary to demonstrate the severity of the situation.

Emmis Radio and HOT 97 will not tolerate such derogatory and racially insensitive content. This incident in no way reflects the spirit of HOT 97. The station has a long-time and well-known reputation for community involvement and support.

Emmis Radio President Rick Cummings said, "What happened is morally and socially indefensible. All involved, myself included, are ashamed and deeply sorry. I know the members of the morning show are truly contrite. They know their actions here are inexcusable." We would like to clarify that no company advertising on our station had any connection to the Tsunami Song and no company advertising on our station endorsed or sponsored the offensive material aired on the "Miss Jones in the Morning" show. We apologize for any misunderstanding that may have caused listeners to believe that anyone, other than the morning show staff, was responsible for the material that should not have been aired.

Official Response to the 'Tsunami Song' by rapper Jin (http://www.alljin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=801&page=1&pp=10)

I'm glad there are some people who know what's wrong and right in the world.

Please, spread the link to the petition and the news of this ridiculous behavior by those in the media as far out as you can, the discrimination needs to stop and those who thought it right to poke fun at such a tragedy deserve to be fired and much worse. Sign the petition, every signature counts.

Thank you.

Kinda reminds me of all the 9/11 "Air Force Come And They Flatten Your HOme" songs about Osama and everything.

There is something to be said for spoofs. For compassion to be possible, people must be able to relativate(?) traumatic events... I've ordered a t-shirt that says "I surfed the Tsunami 2004" (see here (http://www.tshirthell.com/store/product.php?productid=408)), but that doesn't mean that I don't think it's horrible wat happened, nor that I don't grieve for the people who have died, and those who's relatives have died.

It means that I'm able to relativate the event, that I can say "Damn, if there's a god, he's pretty pissed about something :D" and that I fully realize that disasters like this have happened in the past and will still happen in the future. Grieve for those who need grieving, be happy for those who are still living and growing strong yet again, and make sure you're ready for the next disaster. If you want to help, help. If you want to grieve, grieve. If you're one of the persons who deal with those kind of things by writing immature lyrics, then do so. But do not keep hanging in the past. The people who have been hit by the tsunami won't (for else they would *never* be able to pick up their lives again), and so shouldnt anybody else.

Though the lyrics of this one are clearly more immature then usual ("I just saw your mommie floating by"), I don't feel hurt by it. The only thing they accomplisch with that kind of lyrics is to let people see just how little maturity the writers have, but that's about it

So although I don't like people who make hurtful comments and *mean* them, I think the people who are signing this petition are severly overreacting. Don't you have anything better to do with your time?

If you *really* grieve that much for the people who've been through the Tsunami disaster, then help them, don't critizice the way others deal with it. And especially! don't give people who try to get attention by this sort of thing the attention they want.

I'm making one that says " I Survived Tsunami 2004" and wearing it to school.

But I don't think it was right for the radio station to play the song on the air. That is wrong...

the song is wrong and itīs stupid they played it on the radio. okay, some people can handle their emotions and they get over it fast but there are ALOT of people who are not over their traumaīs! I think it is just plain stupid to make such a song and bring it in public. Arenīt those people hurt enough?

Think. As if such a song would hurt them? They'd be hurt because of the familymembers they've lost etc, not some stupid song on the internet.

what if you lost all your loved ones? imagine. Do you think such a song would do nothing to your feelings? Iīd be hurt more.
People need understanding too, not sarcasm and gloating.

Ofcourse it would do nothing. Just imagine that you've lost all your loved ones. Would this song hurt you much more then? No. Because *if* you've lost all your loved ones, then the hurt would still be so fresh, so burning, so unbelievable that it's extremely hard to fathom, and something silly like this wouldn't impact that one little bit, simply becáuse you cannot hurt any more then you already are.

On the other hand, in a few years from now, where you've dealt with half of your hurt, and tucked the rest away because it was too much to deal with, then something like this would indeed hurt, ofcourse. But every sane person would realize that this is just silly and childish.

If you lost a familymember, for example a sister. And some little guy on the street walked up to you and started saying "Your sister is dead, nanana". Would that do anything to you? Maybe, because the hurt you have is still fathomable. But, i certainly hope that you'd also realize that they are just childish words, and that the person saying them doesn't realize what impact they *could* have, so they won't have that impact then.

Don't you think they would get even more hurt if they knew some idiots were making fun of them while their families are dying, kicking them while they're down?

If someone was kicking them while they were down, yes. But this is just a silly, VERY childish spoof, and I think people overreact. Because you KNOW (you can tell by the lyrics), that the one who wrote it doesn't know shit about losing loved ones.. So then it suddenly becomes much less meaningfull, they're just lyrics intended to shock and to get attention, don't let 'em.

It's true you shouldn't let them but it was still very mean and stupid.
Doesn't change the fact some people will get hurt.

You're right about that... But won't they always? If not for such a childish song like this, they'd get hurt by video footage or images in the media.. they'd get hurt when people even just only *talk* about the event.. Because if you've lost loved ones, anything that has a connection with the events that leaded to that outcome hurts, so there's not much anyone can do about that.

That's just really really stupid. And I disagree with you Elco, hearing someone is calling your loved lost one a bitch (swim bitches swim) DOES hurt. Messing with dead people is never good imo. Even with that childish song.

Well, it's funny you should say that, because that has happened to me before, and it nearly made me go kill myself.

But you're right, I'm sure if that happened to everyone else, they'd be just fine.

So many people have been affected, myself included, and hearing people laugh about it, childish or not, still cuts deep and makes me lose faith in society as a whole.

And while people will be hurt by seeing the images on the news, at least the people broadcasting these images show sympathy, and aren't saying "Aha, look at those stupid ch*nks, swim asians swim!" And things to that effect. The difference is the blatant attitude that the song shows, and sickens me to the greatest degree.

Well said. If I lost a family member in the tsunami and read about the song, I'd be pretty pissed off and hurt. I wouldn't just shrug it off as a childish song. Heck, I haven't even lost a family member to the tsunamis, and I'm still offended.
