musicNEWS: The Vines Breaking Up?

05-27-04 Keavin
.
An anonymous Australian source has told antiMUSIC that: “last night, Australian Rock Radio station Triple M held an exclusive listener only concert for the Vines, which has been reported as the worst performance of the year.
“Bass player, Patrick Matthews, walked out on the band after an on stage argument after the 1st song and refused to come back. Lead singer, Craig Nicholls then abused their fans, calling them 'cu*ts' and 'sheep' for being there.

“Later in the performance, minus the bass player - Nicholls allegedly threw a glass at a fan in the crowd - then allegedly kicked a photographer in the face, breaking her camera and recording gear ($15,000AUD worth of damage).

“There was a discussion overheard backstage that the band are breaking up. Could this be the end of the Vines? Full updated details of this event will” reportedly be available soon.

antiMUSIC will attempt to get a statement from the band and we will keep you updated on any developements that we hear about.

Update: The band canceled their show in Sydney on Friday night (May 28). A press release from EMI's press office reads, It is with great regret and disappointment that The Vines announce the cancellation of their Metro show in Sydney tonight.

The show will no longer take place as planned due to illness. The band sincerely apologise for any disappointment caused.

Full refunds for the show are available from the point of purchase.

FULL REFUNDS AVAILABLE: CALL METRO BOX OFFICE ON 9287 2000

Meanwhile, there is an initiative by angry listeners at Triple M radio to have the stations pull songs from the group from their play list.

Update 5-29: at update time, antiMUSIC had not heard back from Capitol Records for comment on this story. However, Triple M Radio issued the following statement about the chaotic show.

Five minutes into Thursday nights’ Triple M Garage Session performance, The Vines guitarist Patrick walked off stage and joined the crowd, adding fuel to the rumour the Vines are on the brink of break up.

A police report has been filed by a Sydney newspaper photographer who says she was kicked during the gig, destroying her camera.

The band stopped half way through many songs with the lead singer screaming at the audience calling them a pack of sheep and telling them to shut up or get out. The intimate crowd of 400 were shocked when asked by the lead singer to “baa” like sheep .

Triple M has held hugely successful Garage Sessions in the past with bands such as The Darkness, The Living End and most recently Jet. It was hoped that the Vines would put on an equally successful show for Triple M listeners.

The station has been inundated by calls and emails from unhappy listeners disappointed by The Vines performance and attitude on the night.

As a result of listener feedback Triple M have dropped all The Vines tracks on their stations’ play lists and are awaiting an apology from the band and their management.

Triple M Program Director, Mike Fitzpatrick said of the incident;
In my opinion it's unprofessional and disrespectful to their fans. I've invited the guys to Triple M to apologise or at least explain their actions on air, but they haven’t called me back. We've supported the Vines until now, but our listeners have made it clear, after the Garage Session performance, they don't want to hear the band on Triple M. I can assure you they will never have another song played on Triple M. Whether they care about that or not, I don't know, but I'll be sure to mention it to Craig the next time he asks me “do you want fries with that?”.

Yeah.. my friend just showed me that. What do you think of it?

Nooooo....!!!

Even though I don't listen to their songs as much as others, I still love The Vines!

Damn, if this is true, then this girl I know is going to be bawling about it for ages... Huge Vines fan... :wth:

Can't say I really care, to be honest. I never liked them.

I saw them live on the MTV VMA's a couple years ago, and they are seriously the worst live band I've ever seen. Although, "Ride", "Outtathaway" and "Get Free" are pretty good.

I would often wonder how Craig could stand up during their performances, let alone sing the lyrics and play the guitar!

Ride has to be the most annoying song ever.

I heard the lead singer was a Ricard, too.

To be honest, I always thought the lead singer sang like he had pounded a couple of beers before he hit the studio. Not only that, but the other members didnt help by performing just as sloppy.

Just another "The" band going on their exit. Does anyone hear from The Strokes or that band that made "Hate To Say I Told You So" anymore? Absolutely not.

The Hives are actually really popular in Europe or wherever they came from.

#### The Strokes, plain and simple.

EDIT: And come on, The White Stripes are one of the biggest rock bands out there. They aren't to bad either.

Ok, I was too lazy to read the news article  .. so tell me are they breaking up or is it just a rumor. I like The Vines, even though they suck. I wouldn't want them to break up.

It's a rumor right now.

I hope they break up. Assholes like that don't deserve to be in the music industry.

Why do say they don't deserve to be in the music industry? What did they do?
I mean even though they're not that great, they deserve to be where they are today... or do they? :shifty:

I also hope this is true, I have never liked The Vines, Their music just doesnt appeal to me, I hate the guys voice with a vengance, And the band are just plain rubbish in my opinion. But Casey i dont agree with what you said, I think they do deserve to be in the music buiseness, they have to have some sort of talent, You dont get into the music buiseness if you have no talent.

Basically, im sure they are a talented band but i plain dont like them.

And you're warned for calling The Vines 'assholes'. You should know by now not to bash other bands for no reason. You wouldn't like it I called Jim Morrison an assh*le.

Lotta drama in the Vines camp. Man, I sorta like The Vines, but after reading that, I think they should break up, just to put them out of their misery. Like others said, their live performances are just plain horrible since they're constantly drunk.

I think they are ok. It doesn't worry me if they do or not. They are always drunk. I've got a friend who knows them.

I hope they don't break up. I'm not a really big fan of theirs - but I still like them. I browsed through their forum... hmm maybe it's true that their breaking up - if they had a "major conflict with the eachother".
